Human rights day celebration in Beirut

10 December, 2014

On December 10, 2014 the Foundation for Human and Humanitarian Rights of Lebanon organized an event dedicated to the 66th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

Representative of the Foundation’s women affairs committee Lina Osseiran opened the evening. In their speeches representatives of the foundation Peter Hanna and Mona Akl presented details about the human rights situation in Lebanon.

Ambassador of Armenia to Lebanon Ashot Kocharian, who was the key speaker of the event,  in his speech spoke about the history, historical, cultural values and rich heritage of the Armenian people, emphasized the important role of the Lebanese Armenian community in strengthening and development of Armenian-Lebanese relations as well as Armenia-Diaspora partnership.

The main part of the Ambassador’s speech was focused on the issue of the Armenian Genocide. He touched upon the issues relating to the mechanisms and phases of perpetrated crime of Genocide, ongoing process of its international recognition, preparatory works being done on the eve of the centennial and the initiatives undertaken by Armenia in the framework of international organizations  for prevention and condemnation of genocides. Ambassador expressed his gratitude to those countries and international organization which have recognized the Armenian Genocide, in particular to the Lebanese parliament which is the only legislative body in Middle East which recognized the Armenian Genocide. While concluding Ambassador Kocharian emphasized that the crimes committed against humanity have no period of prescription. Speaking about the hopeless policy of denial carried out by Turkish authorities, he mentioned that today not only Armenians, for almost a 100 years the whole international community has been waiting for Turkey to recognize the Armenian Genocide.

At the end of the event awards were handed over to judges who made contribution to the protection of human rights.

The president of the Constitutional Court of Lebanon, lawyers, judges, diplomats, representatives of NGOs, Lebanese Central body of the 100 anniversary of the Armenian Genocide, Lebanon-Armenia Friendship Association and students attended the meeting.

Lebanese media, particularly  Nahar daily, MTV and Future TV widely covered the event.
