Commemorative evening dedicated to the 99th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide

On April 10, 2014, a commemorative evening dedicated to the 99th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide took place in the Embassy of Armenia of Lebanon.

After the national anthems of the Republic of Lebanon and the Republic of Armenia, the Ambassador of the Republic of Armenia to Lebanon Ashot Kocharian in his speech pointed out that after 99 years the issue of the Armenian Genocide is still open because the consequences of the crime have not been eliminated yet. Ambassador Kocharian emphasized that the crimes against humanity do not have a period of prescription and the denial of the Armenian Genocide is the continuation of the Genocide and must be condemned by the humanity. He expressed deep gratitude to all countries and organizations, particularly the Parliament of Lebanon, which recognized the Armenian Genocide.
He pointed out that 99 years the Armenians of all over the world and the international community have been waiting that Turkey instead of distorting the historic facts and continuation of the denial policy, will finally officially recognize the Armenian Genocide.
Touching upon the events of Kessab Ambassador Kocharian mentioned that the international community must take decisive steps for guaranteeing the safety and security of the displaced people, including the Armenians, create conditions for their urgent, safe and dignified return to their places of residence. While completing his speech Ambassador Kocharian addressing the present Lebanese Armenians pointed out. “Dear Compatriots, Today along with our brothers and sisters widespread all over the world we pay tribute to the memory of 1,5 million innocent victims. We continue to live and create for the sake of peace and beauty, for the sake of our Motherland for the sake of realization of our national dreams and interests. We have to become more powerful and overcome all existing challenges thanks to our unity, solidarity and potential”.


Rafayel Umudyan who spoke on behalf of the Armenian Genocide Centenary Central Committee of Lebanon highly appreciated close cooperation with the Embassy of Armenia. He emphasized the importance of the coordination of the work, consolidation of efforts for the international recognition of the genocide, restoration of the historic justice, universal condemnation and the elimination of the consequences.

Among speakers of the event were the Member of the Parliament of Lebanon Hasan Mkhayber, the Representative of H.E. Nabih Berry, the President of the Parliament of Lebanon and Apostolic Nuncio to Lebanon H. E. Gabriele Giordano Caccia, who while touching upon the crimes of the 20th century shared the pain of the Armenian nation. They expressed their hope that the international community will take measures for preventing the crimes against humanity in future.

After the speeches singer Shoghik Torosyan accompanied by the pianist Hasmik Gasparyan performed “Cilicia”, “Krunk” and “Ave Maria” songs. A documentary about the Armenian Genocide has been shown during the evening. The guests also signed in the Genocide victims Remembrance Book .

Bishop Shahe Panosyan, the Representative of Aram I, Catholicos of the Great House of Cilicia, the Primate of the Armenian Prelacy of Lebanon, H.E. Fr. Gabriel Muradian, Patriarchal Vicar of the Armenian Catholics, the Representative of His Beautitude Nerses Petros XIX, Catholicos Patriarch of Cilicia of Armenian Catholics, Minister of Energy and Water of Lebanon Arthur Nazarian, Members of the Parliament of Lebanon, the Representative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Lebanon, Ambassadors and diplomats accredited in Lebanon, the leaders and representatives of the political parties, the members of the Armenian Genocide Centenary Central Committee of Lebanon, guests from Kuwait, Iran and Armenia were present at the evening.
