21 June, 2012

On June 21, Lebanese-Armenian sculptor Zaven Khedeshian opened his personal exhibition at the exhibition hall of the Museum of History of Yerevan as part of the “Days of the Lebanese-Armenian Community in Armenia” program of the RA Ministry of Diaspora.

The opening ceremony was attended by Deputy Mayor of Yerevan Vano Vardanyan, Armenian Ambassador to Lebanon Ashot Kocharyan, as well as renowned sculptors, architects and officials.

The event began with a welcoming speech by RA Minister of Diaspora Hranush Hakobyan in which she particularly mentioned:

“Zaven Khedeshian is well-known in the Near East, France and several Armenian communities, yet he is visiting Armenia and showcasing his works here for the first time ever.”

RA Minister of Diaspora Hranush Hakobyan awarded Zaven Khedeshian the “Arshil Gorky” Medal for disseminating fine arts, painting, sculpting and the art of drawing; achieving success in that sphere; disseminating Armenian arts in the Diaspora and making them popular, as well as making his contribution to the development of the Armenia-Diaspora partnership through his career.

Zaven Khedeshian was born in 1932 in Beirut. He received his professional education at the Academy of Arts of Beirut and went on to continue his studies at the National Higher School of Arts in Paris.

Among his sculptures include the first Armenian Genocide memorial in Lebanon, the busts of Garegin Nzhdeh and the greatest Lebanese intellectual Gepran Khalil Gepran, as well as the monument to the 5 martyrs of Lisbon.

Zaven Khedeshian has also created a new engineering teaching plan.

In 1976, the well-known French Larousse publishing house released the encyclopedia entitled “L’art et le monde modern” (Art and the Modern World) in which Zaven Khedeshian’s name is mentioned alongside the names of the world’s greatest artists.

In 2012, Zaven Khedeshian was awarded the St. Mesrob Mashtots Medal by a patriarchal condac of Catholicos Aram I of the Great House of Cilicia.
