On May 10, 2012 ,,Tekeyan” Cultural Association organized an evening entitled “The issue of Cyprus and drama of missing persons”.

In his welcome speech the chairman of the ,,Tekeyan” Cultural Association Mr.Hrayr Hovivyan spoke about the denial policy of Turkey. He expressed the hope that in the future the fair demands of Armenians and Cypriots will result in fail solution.

After screening a film about the history of Cyprus, H.E.Mr. Homer Mavrommatis, the Ambassador of Cyprus to Lebanon delivered his speech.

Ambassador Mavromatis first presented the history of Cyprus, then the details of intervention of the Turkish troops in 1974. The Ambassador also referred to the sufferings of Cypriot people and to the personal tragedy of missing persons. He also spoke of the poor conditions of Christian monuments in Turkish part of Cyprus, including Armenian historical complex Makaravank. He apresented the demographic picture of Cyprus and highly appreciated the active role of the Armenian community in economic and political life of the country.

The second speaker of the evening was Ambassador of the Republic of Armenia to Lebanon H.E. Mr. Ashot Kocharyan.  Talking about the issue of missing persons in Cyprus, the Ambassador said that Turkey for decades maintains a destructive approach to this issue and so far did not provide any information about missing persons. He also spoke about Turkey’s denial policy relating to the recognition of Armenian Genocide and about the continuing problem of illegal blockade of Armenia imposed by Turkey.

In their speeches the speakers highly appreciated the Armenian-Cypriot relationship based on mutual respect and trust. The Ambassadors also noted the political importance of  mutual visits of the  Presidents of both countries. It was mentioned that Cyprus was the second country after Uruguay that in 1982 has recognized and condemned the Armenian Genocide. Importance of the most recent of the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Cyprus, H.E. Mrs. Kozaku-Marcoulis to Armenia in the context of 20th Anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Armenia and Cyprus was emphasized.

The Ambassadors expressed their conviction that exchange of high-level visits created excellent opportunities for expansion and deepening of cooperation between friendly countries in European structures, especially taking into account the fact that since July 1, 2012, Cyprus will assume the presidency of the European Union.
