President of Lebanon Michel Sleiman in the National Assembly

On December 9, Michel Sleiman, President of the Republic of Lebanon, and the delegation headed by him met Samvel Nikoyan, RA NA Speaker, in the National Assembly. Eduard Sharmazanov, Samvel Balasanyan, NA Deputy Speakers, and the Standing Committee Chairs, NA faction representatives were present at the meeting.

Welcoming the visit of the President of Lebanon and the delegation led by him to the Republic of Armenia, the NA Speaker Samvel Nikoyan expressed conviction that it will become a stimulus in the Armenian-Lebanese relations, as well as in the development of inter-parliamentary cooperation. Documenting with satisfaction that the Armenian-Lebanese inter-parliamentary cooperation is at a high level, Mr. Nikoyan mentioned that would do his best to deepen and develop the interaction. Emphasizing inter-parliamentary ties Mr. Nikoyan has stated they are considered to be an important component of interstate relations and the activation of parliamentary ties both in bilateral and multilateral format promote the intensification of mutual understanding and confidence, extension of the framework of united views and the development of cooperation between countries.

In his word, having various similarities with Lebanon and historical traditions of friendship between the nations Armenia will continue the effective cooperation both in the international area and in the direction of the development of bilateral relations. The NA Speaker expressed confidence that Suleiman’s official visit to Armenia will charge the bilateral friendly relations in all the directions. Mr. Nikoyan highly appreciated the brotherly attitude towards Lebanese Armenians. In his word, the Lebanese Armenian community serving as a reliable and sound bridge between the two friendly countries and nations, at the same time has been able to preserve its rich national culture and values, actively participated in Lebanese political, social-economic and cultural life. Samvel Nikoyan has mentioned that Lebanon is a best example of dialog of cultures and religions, religious tolerance, democracy with its multinational and multi religious civilization.

Turning to the regional issues, the NA Speaker stressed the regional sustainability and peace and in this context showed appreciation to the Government of Lebanon in the settlement of NK conflict for the balanced position. The application of dual standards in this regard he considered inadmissible.

Thanking for the warm reception, on behalf of him, the delegation and the Speaker of the Lebanese Parliament the President of Lebanon congratulated Samvel Nikoyan on th occasion of being elected RA NA Speaker and expressed confidence that in his reign Armenian-Lebanese inter-parliamentary cooperation will go on developing and reinforcing. Mr. Suleiman emphasized the mutual support and cooperation between the two countries in the international structures. Touching upon the NK conflict, he mentioned that it would be settled in compliance with international standards, on the nations’ self-determination principle.

The sides considered also other issues of bilateral interest during the meeting.

At the end of the meeting the President of Lebanon left a note in the NA Book of Honourable Guests.
