Concert of the Geghard Monastery Choir in Beirut

27 February, 2013

On February 27 the Embassy of Armenia in Lebanon in the framework of the Al-Bustan international music festival organized a concert with participation of the Geghard Monastery Choir from Armenia (artistic director Mher Navoyan). The concert was performed in St. Louis Cathedral of Beirut.
In his opening remarks Ambassador of Armenia to Lebanon Ashot Kocharian said that the concert greatly contributes to expansion and strengthening of cultural relations between the two friendly countries. Ambassador Kocharian presented some details relating to activities of the choir. It was emphasized that the concert coincides with the tragic events of 1988 which resulted in the loss of human lives among many Armenian families in industrial city Sumgait of Azerbaijan. Ambassador added that the massacres in Sumgait towards Armenian population were the first case of ethnic cleansings in the territory of the Soviet Union.
The concert program of the choir included beautiful music of Mozart, Verdi, Rakhmaninov, Brahms, medieval monodies, as well as classic and spiritual songs of Armenian composers.
The conductor of the choir Anahit Papayan before the intermission also spoke about the tragic events of 1988. She mentioned that each year these days the Armenians all over the world pay tribute to the innocent victims of Sumgait massacres and announced that the next two songs “Cilicia” and an extract from the sacred liturgy would be dedicated to the innocent Armenians victims of 1988 Sumgait massacres.
Among invitees were officials, diplomats, artists, cultural figures, the leader of the Armenian Prelacy of Lebanon Gegham Archbishop Khacheryan, diplomatic staff of the Armenian Embassy, public-at-large and media representatives.
