Conference on the Armenian Genocide at the Patriarchal Congregation of Bzommar

On February 14, 2015 under the high patronage of Nerses Petros XIX, Catholicos Patriarch of the House of Cilicia of the Armenian catholics, and upon the initiative of the Lebanese Central body for Centennial of the Armenian Genocide a conference titled “Armenian Genocide and the archives” was held at the Patriarchal Congregation of Bzommar. Minister of Diaspora of Armenia Hranush Hakobian conveyed her greetings to the participants of the conference through a video address.

In his opening speech Catholicos Patriarch Nerses Petros XIX highlighted the role of archives in having a general perception about the Armenian Genocide. Afterwards Patriarchal Vicar Superior of the Convent Mgr. Gabriel Mouradian and the representative of the Lebanese Central body for Centennial of the Armenian Genocide Rafayel Umudian delivered their welcome speeches to the audience.

Genocide expert Haroutyun Remon Gevorgian presented the first report of the conference which was based on the documents of foreign diplomatic and missionary archives relating to the Armenian Genocide. Then Vardan Ghazanchian presented materials on the Armenian Genocide from the secret archives of Vatican. Prelates of Armenian dioceses of Damascus and Egypt Bishop Armash Nalbandian and Bishop Armen Mazlumian presented details about the comprehensive works being fulfilled by Armenian communities of Syria and Egypt relating to the Centennial of the Armenian Genocide. Professor Vahram Shamesian referred to the Armenian archives of Middle East regarding the Armenian Genocide which contain documents from the archives of Cairo, Catholicosate of Cilicia, Baghdad and Jerusalem.

In his report chief warder of Matenadaran from Yerevan Gevorg Ter-Vartanian presented information to the participants about the Armenian cultural manuscripts and religious books which disappeared due to the Armenian Genocide.

The last report of the conference which was presented by Rev. Fr. Andranik Kranian was dedicated to the life and death of the Blessed Martyr of Mardin Ignatius archbishop Maloyan.

Nuncio of Holy See in Lebanon, Ambassador of Armenia to Lebanon Ashot Kocharian, Prelate of Armenian diocese of Lebanon, representative of the Maroni Patriarch, religious leaders, members of the Lebanese Central body for Centennial of the Armenian Genocide, lecturers of law and history from Lebanese universities, human rights experts participated in the conference.
