Ambassadors accredited to Lebanon visited the “Aram Bezikian” museum in Jbeil dedicated to the memory of Armenian orphans who survived the Armenian Genocide

On December 10, 2015 upon the initiative of the Embassy of Armenia in Lebanon there took place a visit of Ambassadors accredited to Lebanon to the Aram Bezikian Museum located at the premises of the “Birds’ Nest” institution in Jbeil city of Lebanon and dedicated to the memory of Armenian orphans who survived the Armenian Genocide and found shelter at the orphanage. The guests laid flowers at the tomb of Danish missionary Maria Jacobsen.

In his welcoming remarks Ambassador of Armenia to Lebanon Ashot Kocharian mentioned, that the visit was taking place on International Human Rights Day and that the day before, on December 9, the international community for the first time officially observed the “International Day of Commemoration and Dignity of the Victims of the Crime of Genocide and of the Prevention of this Crime”.  He added that the latter was Armenia’s initiative which resulted in adoption by consensus of the relevant resolution submitted by Armenia at the 69th session of UN GA on September 11, aimed at the promotion and consolidation of international efforts against the crime of genocide. Ambassador emphasized that throughout this year progressive mankind expressed its support to and solidarity with the Armenian people, who commemorate the Centennial of the Armenian Genocide. He mentioned that this year also marks the 70th anniversary of liberation of Auschwitz, the 40th anniversary of the Cambodian Genocide, the anniversary of genocides of Pontic Greeks and Assyrians, Rwandan Genocide too. According to Ambassador the international community cannot remain indifferent towards similar crimes committed by Daesh, Al-Nusra and other terrorist groups. Ambassador Kocharian enumerated the main directions which symbolized the organization of a great number of events throughout the world dedicated to the Centennial of the Armenian genocide, namely tribute to the martyrs, expression of gratitude to the countries and international organizations which recognized the Armenian Genocide, international struggle and revival. Ambassador stressed the importance of unity and solidarity for preventing future genocides.

Afterwards, Ambassadors had a tour at the premises of the institution, visited the museum where they got familiar with many documentary materials relating to the Armenian Genocide, establishment of the orphanage and humanitarian activities of Maria Jacobsen.

During the event Prelate of the Armenian Diocese of Lebanon, Bishop Shahe Panosian conveyed the greetings of His Holiness Aram I, Catholicos of the Great House of Cilicia and presented details about the “Birds’ Nest” institution. Prelate of Armenian Diocese of Lebanon, Apostolic Nuncio - the head of the diplomatic corps of Lebanon, representatives of the Ministers of Foreign Affairs and Culture of Lebanon, UN special coordinator to Lebanon, Ambassadors accredited to Beirut and the chairperson of the Armenian Genocide Centennial Central Body of Lebanon were present at the event.
