Events dedicated to the 25th anniversary of Sumgait massacres

 On March 3 in all Armenian Apostolic, Catholic and Evangelical churches of Lebanon sacred liturgy was served on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of massacres in Sumgait. The Embassy of Armenia in Lebanon jointly with the Central Body of the 100th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide organized a commemorative meeting in the hall of the Saint Nshan Church dedicated to the innocent victims of Sumgait. Ambassador of Armenia in Lebanon Ashot Kocharian, Representative of the Central Body Hakob Gergeryan, Representative of the Nagorno-Karabakh Republic in the Middle East Karo Kebabjyan and the leader of the Armenian Prelacy of Lebanon Gegham archbishop Khacheryan delivered their speeches to the audience. Speakers presented details relating to crimes, massacres and mass killings perpetrated by the Azerbaijani authorities against Armenian population in Sumgait, highlighted the necessity of condemnation and appropriate evaluation of the tragic events by international community.

Ambassador Ashot Kocharian in his speech mentioned that azeri authorities responded to the legal and civilized actions and protests initiated by Artsakh people aimed at protection of their rights and freedom with inhuman violence and cruelty, massive and widespread abuse of human rights against Armenian population, economic blocade. Ambassador Kocharian also added that crimes and massacres against the Armenian population in Sumgait perpetrated by the authorities of Azerbaijan were a vivid manifestation of the policy of ethnic cleansing and displacement. He added that international community should know that it was Azerbaijan who started the armed aggression against the Armenian population in Azerbaijan and against people of Nagorno-Karabakh. After 25 years Armenian people all over the world pay tribute to the memory of innocent victims of 1988 and express confidence that the crimes, inhuman cruelties and the massacres against Armenians will be condemned and will be appropriately evaluated by the whole world.

The leaders of Armenian political parties, national structures, as well as the representatives of the Armenian community and mass media were present at the event.
