Visit of the Minister of Education and Science of the Republic of Armenia H.E. Armen Ashotyan to Lebanon

On November 25-27, 2011 Minister of Education and Science of the Republic of Armenia H.E. Armen Ashotian paid an official visit to Lebanon.

On November 25, 2011 within the framework of its official visit to Lebanon, the Armenian delegation, led by Education and Science Minister Armen Ashotyan, was received by Aram I, Catholicos of the Great House of Cilicia.

 During the meeting, the Catholicos presented the challenges and activities of the Lebanese‑Armenian institutions. In his turn, Minister Ashotyan informed the Catholicos on the educational reforms in Armenia and the Government’s projects aimed at developing Diaspora-Armenian schools. He also expressed readiness to assist in solving the Armenian schools’ problems and development programs.       

On the same day, Armen Ashotyan visited the Armenian Book Exhibition, being held in Antelias, devoted to 500th anniversary of Armenian typography.  

Also on Friday, the delegation paid a visit to the Armenian Genocide Commemoration Chapel.

On November 25 Minister Ashotyan had a meeting with his counterpart Hasan Diab. During the meeting Ministers discussed the two countries' educational systems development, educational new programs and prospects of bilateral cooperation. After the official meeting there was a show of the samples of laboratory equipment, which were donated by the Government of Armenia to Lebanese schools.

During the press conference attended by Minister of State of Lebanon Panos Manjian, Member of Parliament of Lebanon Hakob Bagratuni, Ambassador of Armenia to Lebanon Ashot Kochairian and principals of Lebanese schools,  Minister Ashotyan said, that donation of the Government of Armenia will be transferred to the 120 Lebanese schools, including Armenian schools.

Minister Armen Ashotyan had also a meeting with students and lecturers at the Haigazian University.

Minister Ashotyan presented the main goals of the Ministry of Education and the major programs that have been implemented. According to the Minister, there are currently 34 universities in Armenia and the top international school will be established in Dilijan on September 1, 2013. Minister Ashotyan also mentioned that a lot of efforts are being made to raise the level and quality of education in Armenia and underlined that Armenia is "trying to change students' mindset regarding the educational system...".

On the same day, Armen Ashotyan had a meeting with principals and teachers of Armenian schools of Lebanon at the Armenian Embassy. In his welcoming speech, Ambassador to Lebanon Ashot Kocharian informed that this was Minister Ashotyan’s first official visit to Lebanon.

 In his speech, Minister Ashotyan emphasized that the Ministry of Education and Science of the Republic of Armenia is working on making sweeping educational reforms to raise quality and has already managed to achieve positive results.

After Ashotyan’s speech, principals of Armenian schools in Lebanon and representatives of educational boards presented the current issues and difficulties faced by their respective schools. Minister Armen Ashotyan had a meeting with the Armenian community’s media representatives and answered their questions.
