Official visit of the Speaker of the National Assembly of the Republic of Armenia H.E.Mr. Hovik Abrahamyan to Lebanon

On April 11-14, 2010 upon the invitation of the Speaker of the National Assembly of Lebanon H.E. Mr. Nabih Berry the parliamentary delegation led by the Speaker of the National Assembly of the Republic of Armenia H.E.Mr. Hovik Abrahamyan paid a three-day official visit to Lebanon. The Speaker of the National Assembly Hovik Abrahamyan was met at the Rafic Hariri international airport of Beirut by the Speaker of the Parliament of Lebanon H.E. Mr. Nabih Berri.

In Beirut H.E.Mr. Hovik Abrahamyan had meetings with the President of Lebanon General Michel Sleiman, the Speaker of the National Assembly Nabih Berri, the Prime Minister Saad Hariri, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Emigrants Dr. Ali Shami, as well as the members of the Inter-Parliamentary Friendship Group.

During the meetings the parties emphasized the importance of intensification and development of the mutually beneficial contacts between Armenia and Lebanon. Necessity of organization of business forums contributing to the development of the economic relations was emphasized. It was noted that the ties between Armenia and Lebanon are historical, and the Armenian community of Lebanon is a reliable bridge between the two contries. The parties mentioned that two countries are closely and efficiently co-operating in international organizations. The Speaker of the National Assembly of the Republic of Armenia expressed his gratitude to the Lebanese side mentioning that in May 2000 the Parliament of Lebanon led by Nabih Berri adopted a resolution condemning the Armenian Genocide. Mr. Hovik Abrahamyan presented details on the process of the settlement of the NK conflict and Armenian-Turkish relations. Regional issues have been also discussed. Hovik Abrahamyan and Nabih Berri signed Memorandum of Understanding between the parliaments of the Republic of Armenia and Lebanon. Speaker of the National Assembly of the Republic of Armenia invited his Lebanese counterpart to visit Armenia.

The Speaker of the National Assembly of Armenia visited the Embassy of the Republic of Armenia in Lebanon, met also with the Armenian Catholic Patriarch of Cilicia Nerses Petros XIX, the Chairman of the Armenian Evangelical Church Union of Near East Rev. Mkrtich Karagyozian, representatives of the Armenian traditional political parties and Armenian community of Lebanon as well as the citizens of the Armenian village Aynjar. The Speaker of the National Assembly Nabih Berri and the Prime Minister Saad Hariri hosted official dinners in honour of the Speaker of the National Assembly of the Republic of Armenia.
